Photos I took last weekend of the Scaleauto BMW GT2 while I was visiting Mid America Raceway during the Scaleracing weekend of racing.

A bit of editorializing here too, hopefully Scaleauto will not mind... I found the body shape on this car to be VERY nice. All the detail that you'd hope to see on a model of the BMW is there as well as the promise of the car to be a VERY nicely performing car due to the excellent chassis that comes with this car. I'd had the chance to race the Porsche RSR that Scaleauto during a 6-hour team endurance race at Mid America and I simply love that car. The cars were run nearly box-stock with no chassis mods allowed (none appear to be needed BTW) and everyone I'd say was completely taken with the performance of the cars.

The BMW will come with the same chassis, so expect very, very strong performance from this BMW.

I fully expect this BMW to be an extremely good value for your racing dollar (or Euro).

Quite a field of entries too; I would think that this would validate the popularity of this new racing class and assure its place on the International slot racing calendar for years to come.

I thought our readers might like some close-up photos of the Scaleauto cars also- the one above is sporting the popular Gulf livery

Here we see a 911 revival of "Der Truffeljäger von Zuffenhausen" (or more popularly known as "pink pig") livery first seen on the LeMans 917/20 driven by Willy Kauhsen and Reinhold Jöest.

To be fair- the field of 26 prototypes were very good looking in their own right.

Finally, a closeup of a fine looking model of the privateer Peugeot 908 from LeMans 2010. The 1:1 team was in contention for at least a podium finish before succumbing to the same sort of failure that eliminated the works Peugeot entries.

Trier 2010 Race Reports

All indications are that the 2010 Trier Sprint Worlds and OEPS was a huge success. The event even drew ISRA racers Brian Saunders, Michael Landrud, Christer Helgesson, and Lars Harryson who are not generaly known as hardbody racers.

Hopefully we will see many of the same participants for the 3rd Plafit PanAm Championship at Mid-America Raceway and Hobbies to be held October 9th and 10th 2010.

A passing

Alan Smith of Slot Car Illustrated has reported that John Robinson from MRRC has passed away. This is a really sad day. I had the pleasure of meeting John in 2009 at Toyfair in Germany and he was a wonderful person. He loved slots and it was great to have met him and talked with him via email for years.

You will be missed John.

Two New Scaleauto Motors

Scaleauto, a division of MRRC, has brought us a pair of dark blue motors, both rated 20,000 RPM/12v. The S-Can (type FC-130) is rated 170 gcm stall torque at 12v, and the long can (type FK-180) is rated 260 gcm torque. Both motors have ball bearings, which provide minimal friction, while eliminating motor shaft endplay. Small bits of blue epoxy on the armatures show the motors were balanced at the factory.

No-load RPM testing with a tachometer showed that two samples of the FC-130 (the standard sized motor for most slot cars) revved to 23,147 RPM/12v, and 24,351 RPM/12v. This is significantly faster than the motors' rating. Torque of the slower motor was measured with an arm secured to the shaft, pushing down on a scale. Nine readings around a single rotation were measured, with an average reading that equates to 151 gcm/12v. This falls a little short of the claimed torque. When the power is computed using half the torque and half the RPM, we find a maximum of 8.74 Watts at the power peak (in the torque and RPM mid range). This is nearly the same as the Slot.It orange endbell, 21.5k rated motor that is standard in Slot.It cars (which testing shows performance around 23k RPM, and about 9-10 Watts). So, this motor will be a big upgrade for cars with standard Scalextric, Fly, or Carrera motors, and may compete with the best and fastest on many small and medium home tracks.

One sample of the long can was tested next. No-load RPM was 21,669 RPM/12v, and torque was 294 gcm (claimed RPM is 20k, and torque is 260 gcm). Based on these key findings, mid-range output wattage computes to a maximum of 15.93 Watts. This compares favorably to 21k and 25k NSR Kings, and the Slot.It Boxer 2 (which recent testing of one example showed slightly under the claimed torque value).

The case is painted in a rich shade of dark blue, possibly as nice to look at as the famous red cans sold by Scaleauto.
